PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

A teacher must sing and study! As a voice teacher, it’s important to keep my voice techniques and teaching toolbox current.

I further my professional skillset through movement and voice performance study, workshops, masterclasses, voice science and pedagogy training for vocal professionals.

I maintain ongoing certification study through Estill Voice International’s Model – this is a universally respected body of knowledge, developed in an academic research setting by Jo Estill, that helps singers to understand and use the voice. Teaching Info

Technique:

This is the foundation of all good singing, without exception. It is a gift you can give yourself, that will allow you to continue singing competently throughout your life.

the science of sound and support

During lessons, we work to strengthen the physical connection between your body and your voice. This is key to singing with freedom.

It’s good to know how your instrument works! There will be instruction in vocal tract and breathing functions, physical alignment, acoustics, resonance, and aspects of human kinetics, to help you learn to understand and use your physiology to produce sound most effectively and sustainably.

switching styles

We can make physical adjustments to our vocal instrument to suit the music we’re singing: classical vs. pop settings for example.

In the studio, you may cross train between classical and contemporary voicing. This strategy improves motor learning, increases flexibility and assists with tension issues, and can solidify technique across all genres.

sing to learn

During term, you’ll work on repertoire that you like to sing, and that suits your current developmental level and our goals for your progression.

Most students study classical and contemporary voicing exercises and repertoire – for young singers especially, this can be an educational introduction to a variety of musical genres.

Musicianship:

Everyone should read music. It’s another gift you can give yourself, that will last for life. Music literacy instruction is included for singers who don’t yet read music.

Ear training is included in lessons.

Sight singing is offered for every student who expresses an interest, and for students registering for exams.
