Bio
I have taught guitar, mandolin, ukulele and band for over 8 years, with a personalized approach to every student, following and helping to guide their own tastes in music from indie, to jazz, to folk, to classic rock. I hold a Grade 7 in Classical Guitar from the Royal Conservatory of Music, a diploma in Music Engineering and Production from Nimbus School of Recording Arts, and a Bachelors Degree in Jazz and Contemporary Guitar, with a minor in Composition and Jazz Piano from VCC. I taught privately at Deep Cove Music from 2015-2023, helping facilitate and instruct the popular ‘Bandfactory’ program for young bands. I currently teach out of a private space at 1859 Franklin Street, where I’ve enjoyed working with many of my students for years. As a musician, I have performed across Canada, the US, and England. I currently play around Vancouver in jazz groups and manage my own bands: Red Haven and instrumental group Tell Adeline.
Teaching Info
-
I believe that anyone can learn music, and the main barrier to improving is enjoying your practice. By learning music that is close to your heart, you’re invested and excited and are more likely to build a relationship with your instrument.
-
Learning an instrument and learning music are intrinsically tied, but they are not exactly the same thing. True musical fluency comes with an understanding of the building blocks of how music works. The best way to understand the context of these ideas is through examples based off of existing music.
-
A teacher can only take a student so far; the bulk of progress comes through consistent practice. The purpose of a lesson is to guide a student, and show them things they might have missed, or what to do next.
-
Part of learning is developing your own taste. I know a lot of music, and love to point students in the right direction!
-
Everybody learns in different ways and at different speeds. There is no one size fits all technique. I do have processes that I go through, but I will always listen to you, and adapt as best I can to your needs.
